Card Number Alias (CNA)
The Card Number Alias (CNA) feature allows merchants to store a token that represents a customer's card, instead of storing the actual Primary Account Number (PAN). This enables scenarios such as:
- Recurring payments — Charge a customer's card on a schedule without requiring them to present the card each time.
- Loyalty programmes — Link a card token to a customer profile for rewards tracking.
- Saved cards — Allow customers to use a previously registered card for faster checkout.
How It Works
- During the first transaction, the terminal captures the card details and returns a
cardAliasin the response. - Store the
cardAliassecurely in your system — never store the raw PAN. - For subsequent transactions, include the
cardAliasin the request instead of requiring the customer to present their card again.
Security
- The
cardAliasis a non-sensitive token — it cannot be used to reconstruct the original PAN. - Westpay handles all PCI DSS compliance for card data storage; you are only responsible for protecting the alias.
- Aliases are scoped to your merchant account and cannot be used across different merchants.
Functionality
- Cross-Store Integration — CNA is consistent across all stores under the same merchant. When a customer uses their card at any terminal that belongs to the merchant, the CNA generated will be the same.
- Loyalty Account Linking — The cashier can use the CNA to locate and credit the customer's loyalty account, ensuring points are accurately rewarded for each purchase without the need for a physical loyalty card.
This system simplifies the transaction process for both customers and merchants by leveraging a single, consistent alias across all the merchant's terminals.
Implementation
The "cardNumberAlias" parameter can be found in the status endpoint under the "cardPaymentData" section, as shown in the example below:
Json{ "cardNumberAlias": "32BC128A51830D26FE4EC363875DBCD44168D1EE577232F5F7A158A30A58A0F1996860" }
Availability
CNA must be enabled for your merchant account before use. Contact your Westpay account manager to enable this feature. This is required to ensure the terminals are capable of processing card number aliases.
